Ten facts you may not know about sleep.

Sleep plays highly important roles in our lives but many us don’t know so much about what sleep is. Sleep is highly essential to our health and well-being and also a mysterious phenomenon on its own.
Researchers continue to study sleep and answer more questions on it. At the moment, the reason why we sleep still has no direct answer. But let me mention some known facts about sleep.

  1. Most humans spend one-third of their lives sleeping. Well that looks like a large percentage but to me it is expected since sleep has proved to be essential part of our lives.
  2. The record of the longest period of sleeping is 11days. This record was made by a student named Randy Gardner in 1964. Though it was said that the student slept that long due to excessive sleep deprivation.
  3. The condition whereby a person finds it extremely difficult to get of bed in the morning is called Dysania.
  4. Whenever you feel the sensation of falling while asleep and then suddenly jerking awake, the experience is called hypnic jerk. Don’t worry the condition is deemed healthy
  5. Sleep deprivation is said to kill faster than food deprivation. Never deprive yourself of sleep it also prevents your brain from functioning maximally.
  6. People who are born blind also dream but their dreams involves emotions like smell and sound.
  7. Within the first 5 minutes of waking up you forget 50% of your dreams. After another 5 minutes about 90% of entire dream is gone.
  8. A certain scientific study shows that deprivation of sleep reduces pain threshold of a person. But they can’t explain why that happens.
  9. Humans are the only mammals that willingly delay sleep. That’s interesting right? As it is also said that Giraffes are the only mammals that doesn’t sleep deeply.
  10. To fall asleep at night, it should takes at least 10-15 minutes. If you fall asleep in anything less than 5 minutes, it shows you have been sleep deprived.
